One of the first tenants of thinking at a higher level is to define your desired outcomes. Long before you knock on a door or send out an email, our author begins with the question of determining what are you look for, or what do you want. The article brought to mind my coaching philosophy when I share with my clients that their first step is to define their criteria. The correct answers will follow. People who begin their job search first with a task will find that they are reinventing the wheel for every decision.

Seven Strategies To Reboot Your Job Search In 2013

Jenna Goudreau, Forbes Staff

With 12.2 million Americans currently unemployed and a reported 86% of employees interested in finding a new job in 2013, landing your dream job may be more competitive than ever. For those who may not know where to begin, the most important thing you can do is “get out there and start today rather than waiting to be totally ready,” says Carol Camerino, a certified career management coach. At a professional networking event hosted by job-search firm TheLadders, which attracted over 3,500 job seekers in New York, Camerino offered her seven-step plan for successfully rebooting your job search and getting back to work. MORE

Mobile Recruiting Is on the Rise by Erica Swallow

Over the past few years, social media recruiting has garnered a lot of discussion in the HR world — mobile recruiting, on the other hand, is a topic that has yet to make it into the mainstream conversation.

Employers lack knowledge of how job seekers are using mobile devices and how their businesses could take advantage of the mobile web to find top talent. As a result, only a limited number of employers have implemented mobile recruiting strategies via apps and mobile websites, according to a study by online recruiting research lab Potentialpark.

For the study, Potentialpark surveyed more than 30,000 job seekers worldwide and analyzed the mobile career presence of more than 350 top employers in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Since the data has not yet been published online, Mashable spoke with Potentialpark about its findings. MORE

But now, it feels more like an epic college kegger — the kind where you find yourself wandering in a sea of red cups, the clamor of rowdy partygoers drowning out any real conversation and eliminating the chance to forge relationships that don’t involve tacos at 3 a.m.

So, how do you bring that party back down to a reasonable size, and actually connect with people you want to talk to? Half the battle is being able to sift through the noise. Here are a few easy ways to identify and jump into the right conversations with the right people for you and your professional interests. MORE

Hannah Morgan uses the idiom of “being struck in a rut” when she describes how those around her define their job search. It is not that different from my own experiences when a job seeker begins their session by saying ‘woe is me.’ In both case these individuals are expressing sorrow and misfortune. This level of self-pity is a huge negative. It is not how you want to conduct your job search. The first step leading to an effective job search is to adopt key attitudes and behavior. I refer to this as ‘Clear the deck.’ The worst thing you can do is to walk into an interview with a ‘woe is me’ mindset. The employer picks up this negative outlook quickly. [They can see it in your eyes as well.] Let’s make sure that we are not describing you. And if this is a little bit of you see if you find value in any of the points below.

7 Reasons You are Never Going to Get a Job

by Hannah Morgan on July 12, 2011

This is a little sarcastic, I know. But as I was clearing out my email yesterday, I was hit over and over again with reoccurring themes of “stuck in a rut”, “unable to find a job”, “no one wants to hire me” sob stories. If any of these shoes fit, get a new pair quickly. Better yet, share this with people you know, you may even need to highlight the areas they need to fix. Grammatically These two statements

Woe is me” and it is used many times to describe a person who always has a negative attitude and feels as if they are ill used by others and have so much misery in their lives, through no fault of their own… READ MORE

Naomi Loretz recently wrote on her blog that“the top advice I could give is that everyone has advice, and unfortunately it is all different! This can be really frustrating, it can make you doubt that the path you are taking is the correct one. I have a secret…there is no correct path, each thing you do will be interesting and acceptable to some, and not to others. Eventually, you will get a job, and it will be because something that you said or did appealed to another human being. Try being yourself, the authenticity and freshness of your individuality will make you interesting to someone. Keep your outlook positive, use your job search as a tool to learn new skills, learn to be patient with the process and adapt your strategies as you learn more about how to look for a job…”

[Naomi's message is insightful and I like to share more of her conversation in Part 2]

A Conversation on Job-Seeking That You Should Hear — Part 2

Part One of this series covered some overall attitudes and trends involved in a job search. This posting will cover some specifics of creating an online presence. First of all, I suggest starting with Twitter because it is possible to follow/connect with recruiters and leaders in the industries that most interest you. Hopefully you get a chance to meet them this way and can show them who you are in a social space. There are also a TON of really great people out there. The economy is tough and there is a lot of discrimination against the unemployed which means job-hunters will have to work twice as hard to find their dream job. MORE
